The NEBOSH National General Certificate is suitable for both aspiring health and safety professionals and other professionals whose main responsibilities are NOT health and safety.

Professionals who have some responsibility for managing health and safety or managing risks within their departments will hugely benefit from passing this qualification. This includes Production, Operations, Engineering, Maintenance, Human Resources, and General Managers.

The NEBOSH NGC qualification is the first stepping for most new Health and Safety professionals. In fact, many H&S professionals are able to practise their chosen profession with only the NEBOSH NGC. This qualification is suitable for people based in the UK, or who will be based in the UK in the future. Please note: this course is not suitable for people based outside of the UK or who intend to work outside of the UK.

Your course programme:

STEP 1: Familiarise yourself with the course structure, navigation, and assessments.

STEP 2: Study the NG1 Unit. Register for the NEBOSH NG1 Open Book Exam. Sit the exam.

STEP 3: Study the NG2 Unit. Register for the NEBOSH NG2 Practical Project. Submit the project.

STEP 4: Receive your results!

Course Content

NG1 – Law and Health and Safety Management Systems

  • Element 1: Why We Should Manage Workplace Health and Safety
  • Element 2: How Health and Safety Management Systems Work and What They Look Like
  • Element 3: Understanding People and Processes
  • Element 4: Health and Safety Monitoring and Measuring
  • Mock Exam, graded by an ex-NEBOSH examiner.
  • You would then sit the the NG1 Open Book Exam.

NG2 – Hazards, Risks, and Controls

  • Element 5: Physical and Psychological Health
  • Element 6: Musculoskeletal Health
  • Element 7: Chemical and Biological Agents
  • Element 8: General Workplace Issues
  • Element 9: Work Equipment
  • Element 10: Fire
  • Element 11: Electricity
  • You would then submit your NG2 Practical Project.

Passing the assessments for both units means you will gain the full NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety qualification.

By the end of the course, you will have developed the skills to:
  • Justify health and safety improvements using moral, financial and legal arguments
  • Advise on the main duties for health and safety in the workplace
  • Help their organisation manage contractors
  • Work within a health and safety management system, recognising what effective general policy, organisation and arrangements should look like

  • Develop basic safe systems of work (including taking account of typical emergencies) and knowing when to use permit-to-work systems for special risks
  • Take part in incident investigations
  • Help their employer to check their management system effectiveness – through monitoring, audits and reviews

Study Time Recommendations

NEBOSH recommends approximately 108 hours of study to pass the NEBOSH National General Certificate. Here’s how this time can be broken down:

  • Full-time Study: Complete the qualification in around 3 weeks of intensive, full-time study.
  • 8 Hours per Week: Dedicate 45 minutes daily during weekday lunches and a morning session on weekends, and you could achieve the qualification in as little as 3 months.
  • 4 Hours per Week: Commit 30 minutes daily during weekday lunches plus a 1.5-hour session on weekends, and you can complete the course in 6 months.

Flexible Learning

The actual time needed for studying a NEBOSH online course can vary widely depending on your study habits. Some learners prefer to go through each section in-depth, revisiting parts for thorough understanding, while others may skim less relevant sections.

With a NEBOSH online course, you are in control of your study pace.

Important Data Protection Information

In compliance with the Data Protection Act and NEBOSH terms and conditions, we periodically delete customer data that is no longer required. Accounts inactive for more than 36 months are marked as “dormant” and will be deleted, along with any associated data. While we can restore accounts upon request, progress and other data cannot be recovered.

NEBOSH National General Certificate Assessments

To earn the NEBOSH National General Certificate, you must pass two assessments:

  • NG1 Open Book Exam
  • NG2 Practical Project (a risk assessment and report based on your own workplace)

Assessment Schedule and Format

Assessments are conducted monthly, typically on the 1st Wednesday of each month. Both assessments are completed online—no need to attend an exam centre.

NG1 Open Book Exam

  • Format: This online exam involves answering questions based on a realistic work scenario. It is not invigilated, and you will access the exam through the NEBOSH platform.
  • Duration: You have 24 hours to download, complete, and submit your answers, but it typically takes at least 4 hours to finish. Some learners may take longer.
  • Results: Expect your results within 8 weeks.
  • Pass Mark: 45% is required to pass.
  • Retake Policy: If you pass NG1, you do not need to resit it even if you need to retake the NG2 project.

NG2 Practical Project

  • Format: This involves completing a risk assessment and submitting a supporting management report online. The project must meet specific criteria to pass and is evaluated as pass or fail (no numeric pass mark).
  • Completion Time: Plan for at least 8 hours to complete the project, though some learners may take longer.
  • Submission: Projects can be submitted on a monthly basis.
  • Workplace Requirement: Use your own workplace or a suitable alternative (e.g., a friend’s or family member’s workplace). The NG2 can remain anonymous if necessary.
  • Results: Expect results within 8 weeks.

Preparation Resources

  • NG1 Exam Preparation: Includes in-depth tutorials on exam technique, regular Exam Masterclasses, and practice with mock exams.
  • NG2 Project Preparation: Includes comprehensive video tutorials on completing the project, insights on common mistakes to avoid, guided assignments to ensure readiness and tutor discussions.
  • Important Note: NEBOSH prohibits course providers from pre-marking or reading NG2 practical projects before submission.

Initial Course Cost: £459+VAT (£550.80 inc. VAT) payable at the start of the course.

Please note, this does not include the cost of NEBOSH registration for the assessments. These are payable later when you are ready to register for the assessments. These are charged at the applicable NEBOSH rate plus an additional administration fee of £29+VAT.

Cost of sitting the NG1 Open Book Exam: £89 (NEBOSH fee) + £29+VAT (Administration fee) = £123.80 inc VAT.

Cost of sitting the NG2 Practical Project: £89 (NEBOSH fee) + £29+VAT (Administration fee) = £123.80 inc VAT.

TOTAL COST including each assessment and the VAT: £798.40 inc VAT.

When will I receive my NEBOSH results?

NEBOSH will send you your results by email approximately 8 weeks after sitting the assessment. They will send your official paper certificate to Compassa and we will post this to you by recorded delivery. It takes around 30 working days from getting your results to you getting your paper certificate.

What happens if I fail an assessment?

Thanks to our lifetime access guarantee, we will continue to support you until you pass. If you fail one of the assessments, you will need to attempt it again. This does unfortunately mean paying the applicable registration fee again.

Whilst NEBOSH provide no feedback for the NG1 exam, they do provide feedback on why people fail the NG2 practical project. This means you can make the necessary corrections and resubmit, confident that you are much more likely to pass.

What Level is the NEBOSH National General Certificate?

This is a Level 3 qualification, the equivalent of an A-Level.

What are the entry requirements for the NEBOSH National General Certificate?

There are no formal entry requirements. No prior study is needed. But we do recommend that learners have passed the IOSH Managing Safely course first, as this provides an excellent overview of the topic of health and safety management.

What level of English do I need to study this?

You do not need to be a fluent English speaker or writer. But you do need to have a sufficient level of English to understand and articulate the concepts contained in the syllabus. You will need an effective command of the language despite some inaccuracies, inappropriate usage and misunderstandings. You can use and understand reasonably complex language, particularly in familiar situations.

I have dyslexia and/or ADHD or other neurodivergence. Is this course suitable for me?
