Will is a career health and safety professional and trainer who’s managed health and safety for several large organisations.
A chartered member of IOSH with a BSc (Hons) in Safety and Environmental Management and several NEBOSH qualifications, he has nearly 20 years of experience managing health and safety in industry.
Furthermore, he has also implemented Lean Six Sigma programmes, managed Production, Customer Service, and Recruitment.
In this module, we engage the learner and help them discover the many reasons WHY we must manage safely. We also emphasise repeatedly the importance of managers and supervisors taking personal responsibility for the health and safety of their areas and teams. We make it abundantly clear that managers are responsible for health and safety, not the health and safety manager.
Here we lead the learner on a series of exercises helping them develop their risk assessment skills. We make the point that risk assessment is natural activity we carry out all of the time. We then formalise it using definitions and a 5 x 5 risk matrix and explain how to document this properly.
In Module 3, we explain the relevance of the Hierarchy of Risk Controls and how this is used in practice. We emphasise the difficulties of relying on purely PPE and Administrative Controls which may be convenient in the short-term, but costly and impractical in the long-term.
We also explain the concept of "reasonably practicable" and how to decide whether a risk control is reasonable or not.
Here we introduce health and safety law and lead the learner on a journey through a criminal investigation, prosecution, and civil claim. We address topics such as reasonable foreseeability, the duties of employers/managers/employees under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, and the Tort of Negligence.
We finish off by introducing the concept of Health and Safety Management Systems and show how we manage systems for everything in our professional and personal lives.
In Module 5, we finally get to discuss hazards and possible control measures. We explain the risk factors which increase or decrease the risk of injury or ill-health. And we apply the hierarchy of risk controls in showing what the options are for reducing the risk.
In Module 6, we discuss what happens if you fail to prevent an accident. The emphasis is on identifying root causes of incidents instead of focusing on immediate causes. We help the learner discover the importance of true learning rather than blaming those involved. This reinforces the concept of managers taking personal responsibility for health and safety.
In this final module, we explain the difference between active and reactive health and safety measurement and the importance of focusing on active indicators of performance. We also drawing attention to the limitations of solely relying on reactive measures of performance.

“Having completed a lot of health and safety eLearning courses over the years I found this to be the most informative but entertaining at the same time. My interest was held throughout the IOSH Managing Safely course. By being involved, constantly in actually doing something, I learnt more quickly and absorbed the content at all times.”

It is a video with embedded activities inside it which the viewer must interact with in order to make the video progress. This transforms the viewing experience from passive to interactive. It tests knowledge, stimulates critical thinking, and creative problem-solving on health and safety issues.
This course is the world's very first IOSH Managing Safely course to be fully delivered using interactive video technology.
We appreciate that some people don't like watching videos and prefer other methods of delivery. Therefore we have included:
Whenever they like! It is an eLearning course. People can log on and study the course at a time which suits them. They have up to 6 months to complete it. It is usually best to break it up into small daily chunks of 30min to 60min.
This means studying this IOSH Managing Safely eLearning course can fit in around busy schedules and ensuring your people are available for work duties and not committed to a full three days in a classroom.
Between 1 to 3 days, depending on how fast the learner absorbs information and gets through materials.
In the classroom, IOSH Managing Safely® takes 3 days (24 hours of contact time). However, with an eLearning course, delegates can progress at their own speed. At best the course can be completed within a day. Others can complete it with a few weeks. Delegates have up to 6 months to finish the course.
If someone studies in daily chunks of 30 to 60min, the course can be finished within 2 to 6 weeks.
The course is targeted at frontline managers, supervisors, and team leaders who have day-to-day responsibility for the health and safety of their people and areas. Middle and senior managers will also benefit enormously along with those in support functions such as Facilities, Human Resources, and Health and Safety Representatives. Providing Health and Safety training to frontline management teams is a legal requirement.
The course is designed to be suitable for all industries, including services, administration, construction, manufacturing, engineering, logistics and warehousing, agriculture, shipping and freight amongst many others.
IOSH Managing Safely® is the market-leading and most recognised health and safety course targeted at managers and supervisors. It has existed for over 25 years and its content is regularly updated. Every training provider must cover the same content. However, there are large variations in the quality of the courses provided. Many of the older eLearning courses are simply powerpoint presentations with embedded quizzes.
There are two assessments, both of which are submitted completely online.
1. A 45-minute multiple choice assessment.
2. A workplace project, where you carry out a short risk assessment.
You have two attempts at each assessment included. Most people pass on the 1st attempt.
In our view, you can't manage safely if you don't know how to manage people. Whilst the core content of the Managing Safely® is very comprehensive on health and safety topics, it does lack any useful information on the necessary soft skills such as how to manage and communicate with people and how to win them over. We believe these soft skills are just as important as the safety knowledge, if you want your people to manage safely.
We are so confident this online IOSH Managing Safely eLearning course will make an impact and improve your people's attitude to health and safety, that we are prepared to offer you your money back if it doesn't.
