Compassa Wins the 2026 H5P Award for Most Innovative E-Learning Content
By Will Taylor, Ex-NEBOSH Examiner, CMIOSH, and Lead Tutor at Compassa
The landscape of online Health and Safety training is shifting, and we are incredibly proud to announce that Compassa is leading the charge.
We are thrilled to officially announce that Compassa has won the prestigious H5P Award 2026 for the “Most Innovative Use of H5P Content.” In addition to taking home the top prize for innovation, we were also honoured as a Finalist in the “Impactful Gamification” category.
For years, the health and safety training industry has been plagued by boring, text-heavy “click-next” slideshows. At Compassa, our mission has always been to completely revolutionise online course design for IOSH Managing Safely and the NEBOSH General Certificate. These awards are a massive validation of our interactive video technology, our dedicated team, and our commitment to making health and safety training genuinely fun, engaging, and highly effective.
Here is a deep dive into the award-winning simulators that are changing the way students learn health and safety, why they work, and how they prepare our learners to achieve industry-leading exam pass rates.
The Winner: “What Can Go Wrong?” (Safety Inspection Simulator)
Category: Most Innovative Use of H5P Content
Our award-winning entry is a highly advanced, fully interactive Safety Inspection Simulator aptly named: “What Can Go Wrong?” Currently featured as a core module in our NEBOSH and IOSH online courses, this simulator is not a multiple-choice quiz; it is a dynamic, visual journey. It places the learner directly into the shoes of a health and safety inspector tasked with evaluating various workplace environments.
How the Simulator Works:
- Hazard Identification: The learner is transported through a variety of distinct workplace environments, including a busy office, a high-risk welding bay, and an outside road worksite.
- The Hierarchy of Risk Controls: When a hazard is identified, the learner cannot simply click “fix.” They must choose the appropriate control measure strictly according to the Hierarchy of Risk Controls (Elimination, Substitution, Engineering Controls, Administrative Controls, and PPE).
- Hilarious Cause and Effect: Health and safety doesn’t have to be dry. Depending on the control measure the learner selects, they are treated to a custom animation showing the effect of their choice (often with hilarious, disastrous results if they choose the wrong control!).
- The Inspection Checklist: As the learner progresses, the simulator visually demonstrates how to accurately record findings on a formal inspection checklist, bridging the gap between theory and practical workplace application.
Testing Advanced H&S Metrics: To pass a NEBOSH or IOSH exam, you must understand performance measurement. After completing five workplace inspections, the simulator challenges the learner to calculate the overall inspection score.
We then push the boundaries of standard e-learning by introducing dynamic data analysis. The simulator reveals additional content showing how the inspection score is deteriorating over time. It then challenges the learner to analyse the data: Does a deteriorating inspection score indicate that the workplace risk is decreasing, or increasing? By integrating safety monitoring, risk control, and active performance measurement into a gamified format, we ensure our students deeply understand these core syllabus topics before they ever sit down for their final exam.
(Easter Egg Alert: If you look closely at the animated inspection checklist in the simulator, the writing is actually in Klingon. If anyone speaks fluent Klingon, please email me and tell me what it says!)
The Finalist: “The Reluctant Manager” (Mental Health Negotiation Simulator)
Category: Impactful Gamification
Mental health and workplace stress are incredibly complex topics, making them notoriously difficult to teach via traditional e-learning. To tackle this, we submitted our groundbreaking interactive module, “The Reluctant Manager: A Mental Health Negotiation Simulator,” which secured us the Finalist spot for Impactful Gamification.
This simulator uses advanced Branched Video Scenario technology, functioning much like a high-stakes “Choose Your Own Adventure” movie.
The Scenario: The learner assumes the role of a newly appointed Health and Safety Manager. Your objective is highly realistic: You must convince a stubbornly negative, old-school Managing Director (MD) to take workplace mental health seriously and authorize a formal Stress Risk Assessment.
The Gameplay:
- Dynamic Video Roleplay: The simulator features two actors engaged in a lengthy, high-quality video roleplay. As the H&S Manager, you dictate the flow of the conversation.
- Overcoming Objections: The MD continuously argues back, firing realistic, aggressive objections and questions at you. You must select the correct responses in real-time.
- Building the Business Case: To win the argument, the learner must strategically deploy the core arguments for health and safety: Moral, Legal, Financial, and Operational. If you rely too heavily on just the legal argument, the MD will shut you down. You must balance the financial costs of absenteeism with the moral duty of care.
- The “Nuclear” Option: We built this simulator to be as entertaining as it is educational. It really is a struggle to win over the most negative MD in the world. In one specific scene, if the frustration boils over, you are actually given the dialogue option to physically fight him. Choosing this results in a hilarious, imaginary leap across the office desk to smack and strangle him! (Note: This is not recommended IOSH practice, but it certainly keeps our students awake and engaged!)
If you choose your arguments carefully and navigate the objections with professional competence, you will successfully gain permission to conduct the Stress Risk Assessment, completing the module.
Why Compassa is Revolutionising NEBOSH and IOSH Online Training
Winning the H5P Award 2026 is an incredible milestone, but it serves a much larger purpose. These simulators are not just flashy gimmicks; they are the foundation of our online training strategy.
When studying for rigorous qualifications like the NEBOSH National General Certificate, the NEBOSH International General Certificate, or the IOSH Managing Safely certificate, passive reading simply does not work.
The Compassa Difference:
- Led by an Ex-NEBOSH Examiner: As an Ex-NEBOSH Examiner, I know exactly what the exam boards are looking for. I know where students lose marks, and I know which concepts (like the Hierarchy of Controls or calculating injury rates) cause the most confusion. We design our simulators specifically to target and resolve those exact pain points.
- Interactive Video Technology: We are the world’s premier provider utilizing interactive video technology. You aren’t just reading about a welding bay hazard; you are visually inspecting it, applying controls, and seeing the immediate consequences of your actions.
- Superb Pass Rates: This gamified, immersive approach to learning directly translates to exam success. Over the last 12 months, our students have achieved a remarkable 84% first-time pass rate for the NEBOSH exam, drastically outperforming traditional textbook-based providers.
When students are actively engaged, laughing at a scenario, and critically thinking about their choices, the knowledge retention skyrockets. That is how you build a competent health and safety professional.
Official Statement from Will Taylor, Owner & Lead Tutor at Compassa
Reflecting on this incredible achievement, Will Taylor released the following statement regarding the 2026 H5P Awards:
“We are absolutely thrilled and very pleased to have received this award. Our entire team puts so much passion, energy, and late nights into making our IOSH and NEBOSH training genuinely fun, engaging, and highly interactive. They thoroughly deserve being recognised on a global stage like this. Whilst I designed the basic concept of the activity to align with the NEBOSH syllabus, it was my brilliant colleague, Adam Morrow, who brought it to life. Adam created all of the animations, coded the branched logic, and put the whole simulator together. The sheer amount of effort he put in was incredible, and much of it goes unnoticed behind the scenes—so this award is a massive testament to his talent. I will say, we are somewhat disappointed that the H5P judging panel did not spot that the writing on our animated inspection checklist was entirely in Klingon! If anyone out there speaks Klingon, please tell me what it says! But in all seriousness, thank you to H5P for all the work you do globally in the e-learning space to empower creators, and thank you to our amazing students who test these simulators every single day.”
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
To help our prospective students understand how our award-winning content fits into their career goals, we have answered some of the most common questions about our training methods.
What is the H5P Award? H5P is a globally recognised, open-source content collaboration framework used by thousands of universities, educational institutions, and corporate training providers worldwide to create interactive HTML5 content.
