Training H&S Committee Members - Consultation and Engagement
Posted on 8th October 2019 at 06:15
During September 2019, we developed and delivered a bespoke training programme for Health and Safety Representatives and H&S Committee members at Cambridge Assessment, and delivered this to all UK H&S Reps over 5 sessions held in Cambridge.
Cambridge Assessment - 2,500 people around the Globe
Cambridge Assessment are a large international organisation, totalling around 2,500 people across the globe. In the UK, they have around 60 Health and Safety Representatives, management representatives, and a complex structure consisting of a Group H&S Committee and a number of sub-committees.
"Felt Will Taylor ran the session really well. Kept us engaged all day. Not boring at all."
Jo Venn, Health and Safety Rep"
Learning how to Consult and Engage!
We spent some time getting to know Cambridge Assessment and understanding the problem they were trying to solve by asking for this training. The H&S Reps were unsure of the purpose of the role and what they were supposed to do. They were, to some extent, invisible to the rest of their colleagues who also did not fully understand what a H&S Rep is supposed to do. This lack of clarity meant that the H&S Committee meetings were being run more like a "Review of H&S Performance" meeting, instead of being used as an opportunity for management and staff to discuss H&S issues and seek solutions that are acceptable to all.
"The training was very relevant, effective, engaging, and fun!"
Suzannah Taylor, H&S Rep
All the H&S Reps and management reps needed a solid grounding in the basics of health and safety, including hazards, the financial consequences of incidents, and criminal and civil duties. From there, we focused the course on the role of the H&S Rep under the legislation and also what they are required to do in practice. We carried out a number of exercises, helping the delegates figure out their own ways of engaging and consulting their colleagues for their views on health, safety, and wellbeing.
"Really liked the interactive element with the quizzes. Really good discussions in the room." Dianne Muir, Health and Wellbeing Advisor
